 Lefka Ori (it means White Mountains in Greek) is a mountain located in West Crete, in Chania and Rethymno prefectures. The White Mountains or Lefka Ori occupy a good part of the centre of West Crete and are the main feature of the region. They are made of limestone and called White Mountains because they are covered in snow until late in the spring.
The highest summit is Pachnes (2.453m) and there are over 30 summits that are higher than 2.000 m. The White Mountains also have about 50 gorges, the most famous being the Samaria Gorge. Another characteristic of the mountain is the plateau of Omalos which is a round plain surrounded by mountains, at an altitude of 1100 m.
Lefka Ori is the second tallest mount in Crete (after Idi or Priloritis) and the 10th in Greece.
There are only a few roads leading into the White Mountains: the road to Omalos and the entrance of the Samaria Gorge and the road to Chora Sfakion through the plateau of Askifou. There are also a few dirt roads leading to a higher altitude but if you really want to experience the mountains you will need to walk.
The centre and southern part of the White Mountains lying at an altitude of 1800 m and above are a moon landscape technically called a high desert and unique in the northern hemisphere.
There are 4 refugees in Lefka Ori. The Volikas Refuge was built in 1958. It is located above the village Kampi Keramion, in an altitude of 1.450 meters. It can accommodate up to 30 persons. The Kallergi Refuge was built in 1970. Its altitude is 1.650 meters and it can accommodate 45 persons. It is located 5 km from Omalos. The Tavris Refuge was built in 1992 and it is located near Ammoudari, 7,5 km from Askyfou, in 1.200 meters. It can accommodate up to 45 persons. The Svourichti Refuge was built in 1994. It’s located 7 hours from Anopolis in 1.980 m. and it can accommodate 20 persons.
White Mountains has a rich history as a rebels covert during Greek wars against the Venetians and Turks, as well as during German Occupation (1941-1945).
 Kefalas is a village on the island of Crete, Greece, 282m above sea level. Kefalas owes its name to the first residents there, called the Kephalades, the leaders of the Byzantine settlers sent to Crete in 1182. It is in Vamos municipality in the Apokoronas region and about five minutes by car from the village of Vamos itself and about 10 minutes to Almirida beach on the northwest coast of the island. A picturesque village right on the northeast edge of the Drapanos peninsula, built facing the sea with interesting architecture, Kefalas is well-preserved. It is of interest to visitors with its village streets, sea views and tavernas. Eight churches can be found here. The views from Kefalas to the Bay of Georgioupolis and the Cretan White Mountains are spectacular and on a clear day Rethymnon can be seen. Kefalas is largely unspoilt by tourism and the old traditional way of life still remains, although many new houses and developments have sprung up around the village for tourists.
 Falassarna is the westernmost village in Crete, located approximately 20km from Kissamos in the neck of the Gramvoussa peninsula.
The name Falassarna is pre-hellenic and is derived from the nymph "Falasarni". Falassarna used to be the port of ancient Polyrinia. The peak of the city of Falassarna was during the Hellenistic period and at the time the city had its own coin. Its port was closed and surrounded by walls and it was connected to the sea with a canal.
The port and the canal today are cultivated land due to the fall of the sea-level, the ancient remainings are located 300-400 meters from the sea. The secure position of the port, the impregnable fort and the rich valley of the area indicate that Falassarna was a great naval and commercial center.
The remains saved today are part of the supporting walls of the city as well as part of its Cyclopean walls, defensive towers, foundations of houses and remains of the temple dedicated to Artemida or Appolona.
Present days Falassarna is a quiet resort, with many small hotels, apartments and taverns, close to the wonderful sandy beach. There are also many spots for free camping.
Here the visitor can admire the magnificence of the archaic landscape and the blue sky.
One of the most beautiful stretched sandy beaches in Crete, "Pahia Ammos" (thick sand), is located south of Falassarna.
